Police Legal Sciences, Inc. is a corporation dedicated to helping law enforcement professionals improve their decision-making skills. Our lessons are considered by professionals in the field (police officers, training officers, CALEA assessors, and prosecutors) to be the "Gold Standard" in the field of state-specific, legal update training. Additionally, PLS provides telecommunicators with on-line lessons that increase their capacity to effectively serve their communities.
PLS is comprised of small teams of lawyers, former police officers/administrators/current public safety personnel, and experienced editors who are dedicated to producing dynamic, high-impact lessons that law enforcement professionals can take via the Internet.
Non-lawyer editors with police backgrounds supervise lawyers to ensure the "street relevancy" of each lesson. The lawyers, present and former prosecutors and appellate attorneys, who create the lessons have more than 150 years of experience in the criminal justice system.
Our lessons rely on three principles:
1. Reality-Based Problem Solving. We have found that a reality-based "you make the call" model is the most effective method for strengthening the capacity of officers to correctly apply the “nuts and bolts” of the law and make good decisions. The lessons are "inter-activated" in two steps: a) teaching officers about a new case, new statute, or new legal principle; then b) requiring them to apply it to actual cases from their specific state.
2. Decision-Making. The focus of each lesson is to promote good decision-making in the application of the current, relevant (statutory and case) law to specific situations.
3. Police-Prosecutor Alignment. Each lesson is structured to "align" police officers with their prosecuting attorneys to put everyone on the same page. At many subscribing agencies the prosecutors take the same PLS lesson the police do.
It is our fundamental belief that: If we strengthen a police officer's capacity to make good decisions we will enhance the quality of life in the community where that officer serves.
