PLS has provided monthly, interactive, state-specific online training for Iowa law enforcement officials for over 15 years. 

 

PLS online training keeps officers current on recent and relevant state and federal court cases that directly impact their effectiveness in enforcing the law and in avoiding unnecessary liability exposure.

PLS Iowa legal update lessons for law enforcement officers review cases from the following courts:

  • United States Supreme Court

  • 8th Circuit Court of Appeals

  • Iowa Supreme Court 

  • Iowa Court of Appeals 

Our legal update training for law enforcement officers focuses on the following issues: 

  • Search and seizure issues/Fourth Amendment law.

  • Traffic stops.

  • Vehicle searches. 

  • Home searches. 

  • Consent issues.  

  • Interrogations/Fifth and Sixth Amendment law. 

  • Right to counsel. 

  • Excessive force. 

  • Civil rights claims under 42 U.S.C. section 1983.

LESSON PACKAGES

PLS provides 12 hours of online training in Iowa each year. The training generally consists of: 

  • At least four hours of case law updates. 

  • A legislative update lesson. 

  • An ILEA-approved mental health lesson. 

  • Technical and interpersonal skills topics.

  • A standard package costs $120 per officer per year. 

The new Iowa Code section 808B.11G requires Iowa law enforcement officers to have annual training on de-esclation technqiues and bias prevention. PLS has training online training on these subjects.  Once the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy releases regulation regarding this training, PLS will strive to provide this training in accordance with those regulations
