2022 Lesson 8: Domestic with Stabbing / Shooting into Vehicle

This one-hour training helps prepare 9-1-1 dispatchers for calls involving domestic incidents with stabbings and drive-by shootings. In the first section, a caller is reporting that her brother has stabbed his ex-wife. The lesson addresses:

  • Being alert to possible suicide by cop scenarios.

  • Using the established standard guideline to obtain a full suspect description.

  • Acknowledging when a caller requests specific resources.

  • Dispatchers conditioning themselves to not overreact to things a caller says.

  • Avoiding leading questions.

  • Determining if anyone on scene is using drugs or alcohol.

In the second section, a caller is reporting that another motorist shot into her car. The lesson addresses:

  • Obtaining suspect vehicle descriptions.

  • Avoiding the use of phrases that callers may find dismissive.

  • Recognizing “red flag” statements.

  • Providing emergency medical instructions.

  • Using the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
